Membership Award

Each year, an award is honouring a member who has made a substantial contribution to Beckenham Chorale.

For many years, the John Gould Trophy Award was given to the person who sold the most concert tickets. This trophy was originally given by John Gould who was both Chair and President during his long career with the Chorale.  In 2021 the committee decided the trophy should be awarded to those who have contributed in a significant way to the chorale and its membership. The last recipient has become the permanent steward of the trophy as the Chorale now enters an new phase.

The Eamonn Murphy Award

The Eamonn Murphy Award was inaugurated in 2024.

Eamonn Murphy  joined Beckenham Chorale in September 2000.

In 2006 he became concert manager and a committee member before being elected as chairman in 2012, a position he held for 6 years. Eamonn skilfully led the choir through major changes, amending the Chorales constitution, creating a new website and ensuring the finances were on a sound footing. He also oversaw the appointment of two musical directors including Mark Griffiths in September 2016.

Eamonn loved the challenges of technology. During lockdown he embraced the world of zoom which enabled the chorale to continue to rehearse online. For this he was awarded the John Gould trophy in 2020.

Eamonn died whilst still a member of the Chorale in February 2023.

Eamonn’s wife Carole asked that we create an award in his name as  being a member of the  Chorale was so important to him  She gave us a beautiful carafe which reflected his love of fine design and fine wine.

In it's first year, the Eamonn Murphy Award was given to Janet Guntrip for her contribution to Chorale life and concerts over many years. Janet joined the choir 25 years ago, in 1999, and has been compiling and editing our splendid concert programmes for most of that time.
