JOHN NIGHTINGALE’s first experiences of public music-making date from his schooldays at St. Dunstan’s College, Catford, where he sang alto in the choir and often appeared as a pianist in school concerts.   He furthered his studies with the late Geoffrey Connah, concentrating on keyboard accompaniment in which he later qualified at the Royal Academy of Music.   At the same period he began to work as a choral accompanist with the Beckenham Chorale and the Beckenham (later Bromley) Summer Choral Festival, and as a recital pianist with solo singers and instrumentalists.   He has accompanied at summer schools, master-classes and international music competitions as well as appearing as a concerto soloist and piano duettist and has also been a regular player in chamber music concerts, notably in performances with the locally-based Hammig String Quartet.   After many years as a member of BBC Radio 3’s planning team he now freelances as accompanist, writer and editor, with a special interest in the music of the Wesley family.   He also assisted Dr. Lionel Sawkins, the Chorale’s former conductor, with the production of his thematic catalogue of the music of Michel-Richard de Lalande, which appeared in 2005.   His work with the Beckenham Chorale has included many years as the Chorale’s chorus-master, a post from which he recently retired, and as conductor of many of the Chorale’s Christmas concerts.   He was also Director of the South London Singers for twenty-five years.
